JAMES QUINTON DURWARD After a short struggle with cancer James Quinton Durward passed away on December 14, 2003 at St. Boniface Hospital with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Enid (Morris) daughter Mavis Hall Taillieu (Wilfred) son Jim Durward (Danielle) and two grandsons, Graeme and Tyler Hall. He leaves to mourn a brother Charlie (Annabelle) sister Marguerite; sister-in-law Winona McFarlane; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wilma and Andy Duncan and Glenn and Donna Morris; as well as many nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Euphemia Durward, an infant brother Walter, brother Bill Durward, sisters, Alana Saunders, Thelma Willis and Jean Durward and a grandson Garth Taillieu. Jim was born March 28, 1928 at Pratt Manitoba and received his education at Great Carelton and Arizona schools. After the death of his father in 1941 he and his mother and younger sister moved to Austin. When his mother died in 1944 he went to work for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. On April 17, 1944 he began his lifelong career with the railroad which involved moves from Austin to Raeburn, back to Austin, Brandon, Souris, Thunder Bay and finally Winnipeg. When he took early retirement at age 60 on December 31, 1987 he was just three months short of forty-four years of service. At 16 he began as a labourer and at 60 he retired as the Supervisor of Maintenance of Way, Prairie Region, CP Rail. In his younger years Jim enjoyed hockey and curling and even took up downhill skiing at age 47 while living in Thunder Bay. Golf was a major challenge which he undertook daily for many years. Jim was a Past Master of the Gothic Masonic Lodge in Austin, MB and was to receive his 50 year jewel in March of 2004. He was a volunteer for the Masons for 10 years when he drove cancer patients to and from their treatment appointments. After retirement, Jim and Enid travelled extensively both abroad and in Canada and the USA. They enjoyed their motor home excursions before settling for the winters at Orange Grove Park in Edinburg, Texas, where they made many lasting friendships. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ralph Wong and the staff at CancerCare, St. Boniface Hospital, as well as the staff on A5 South and the nurses who attended while Jim was being cared for at home. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapel, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg. A reception will immediately follow. A family interment will follow at a later date at Austin Cemetery.
