DOUGLAS McADAM 1955 - 2003 On December 19, 2003 after a short but stubbornly fought battle, Doug went to be with his Lord and Saviour. We have lost a husband, father, son, grandson, brother, uncle and friend. Doug will be sadly missed and leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 21 years, Brenda; and their three daughters (Dougs pride and joy), Lindsey, Brittany and Kier; his mother Florence McAdam; and his brothers and sisters and their families, Brian McAdam (Susan), Sheila Ridge (Pat), Ward McAdam (Cheryl), Brenda Managh, Rob McAdam (Penny), Colleen Hogue (Brian) grandmother Lillian Kuhn; brother-in-law Ivan Flamand; father Keith McAdam; mother-in-law Jean Carlson; sister-in-law Bonnie Carlson; brother-in-law Brad Carlson; grandmother-in-law Peggy Hagemier; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Doug was predeceased by his grandfather Henry Kuhn in September 1994 and father-in-law Herb Carlson in May 1994. Doug was born November 19, 1955 and lived his entire life in Winnipeg. He attended Cecil Rhodes elementary and junior high school and completed his education at Tec Voc High School. Doug began his career with the City of Winnipeg, first with the Water Works Department in September 1974 while waiting to fulfil his dream of joining the City of Winnipeg Fire Department (now the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service) which he did in July 1977. Due to Dougs illness and opposite to his desire, Doug prematurely retired December 13, 2003 having achieved the rank of Lieutenant June 29, 2003. Doug married Brenda Carlson on September 18, 1982 and they had 21 years together. Doug had a generous heart and even though at times it must have been hard to live in a house filled with women, he loved to spoil his four girls. He loved being a dad to his three daughters, taking them on picnics, tobogganing, ice cream sampling, family movie nights, cheering them on at basketball games and especially spoiling them on family trips. Doug enjoyed being a Firefighter and gave it his all, never giving less than 110%. Doug had the respect of all his work comrades. Doug was an active charter member of Garden Park Baptist Church where he made many friends while serving his Lord. As a husband, father, son, brother and grandson Doug was ready and willing to help out wherever and whenever needed. On November 15 Dougs mom graciously hosted a wonderful evening at Rae and Jerrys where we were all able to celebrate Dougs 48th birthday along with his grandmas 95th. The highlight of the evening was being able to surprise Doug with the presentation of his Years of Service plaque and his much deserved retirement watch. Doug was thrilled and honoured to see many of his colleagues who arrived to surprise him with the presentation. Brenda and the girls have been overwhelmed with the tremendous support that they have received. Words are not enough and thanks go to family, Garden Park Church family, The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, Microbiology at the H.S.C., Dr. Ross, Ruth and Natalie of Kildonan Medical Centre, Dougs Palliative Nurse Maryanne, the wonderful staff at St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care, Dr. Krcek and the many wonderful friends and neighbours who have assisted us on this difficult journey. A special thanks to Dougs brother Ward and sister Colleen who spent many hours with Doug and family in the past few months. Brenda would like to thank her best friend Cheryl McAdam who introduced her to Doug 23 years ago and has walked by her side every step of the way. A celebration of Dougs life will be held Monday, December 29 at 1:00 p.m. at Albright Church, 3400 DeVries. Pastors Bob Shelton and Darryl Hartwig officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Firefighters Burn Fund or Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 455 LAGIMODIERE BLVD. 982-7550
