RICHARD (Rick) JOHN GYLES It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Richard John Gyles of Selkirk. He will be lovingly remembered by his parents Harold & Betty Gyles, his brothers; Bill and wife Darlene (Grapko) Gyles, Grant and wife Karen (Rudniki) Gyles , Don and wife Meg (Hakenson) Gyles, his sister Lauren Gyles, his nieces and nephews; Tiffany and Liz Gyles, Amanda and husband Jeff Plante and son Erik, Raphe, Hallie and Petra Gyles, Jay Gyles, and Geordie, Dylan, and Daly Gyles, along with many cousins and friends. Rick was born on December 16, 1952 in Winnipeg, MB. After graduating from St. James Collegiate and attending university, Rick began working for the government in the department of Justice, where he had a distinguished career for over 25 years. His positions of Court Clerk, Small Claims Clerk, and Magistrate gave him a legendary knowledge of the criminal code that was accessed by his fellow colleagues and judges alike. Rick lived his life eager to share his many passions. A voracious reader, he delighted in supplying his friends and family with books of his or her taste, usually with a critical review. His love of movies was also freely shared in whatever video format was new at the time, and he will leave a legacy library that will be enjoyed for years to come. Ricks sweet and gentle nature was only displaced when world domination was on the line during the many games of Risk or Axis and Allies he loved to play. Ricks generosity was also well known. During the season he loved most, Christmas, the biggest kid of all would break all spending limits and try to prove that bigger was better, much to the delight of whoevers name was drawn that year. That generosity was also bestowed upon his nieces and nephews, earning him the title "Uncle Treat" for his many forays to the store for fresh supplies of candy and movies. It was not uncommon to see Rick arrive back home from the Dairy Queen with enough ice cream sundaes for everyone in the house. The time he spent with them will be treasured memories of relationships that were filled with love. Rick loved his time spent at the family cottage (now his parents home) at Lake of the Woods in Keewatin, ON. Every year his holidays would be carefully planned around spending as much time there as possible. This included several phone calls to siblings to coordinate schedules, or to rub in how much holiday time he had. Room 4, "the den of inequity" will have a void hard to fill. Ricks phone calls were also legendary. Anyone receiving one knew that after talking to him and hanging up, the next ring of the phone - which inevitably arrived a few seconds later - could be answered "Hello Rick". Rick you will be greatly missed and we will all be forever waiting for that second phone call to come. Be at Peace. A memorial reception to celebrate Ricks life will be held on January 8, 2004 at the Norwood Hotel, 112 Marion St. from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Neil Bardal Inc. 949-2200
