JOSEPH EDWARD HERNER 1917 - 2003 Peacefully, with his daughter at his side, Joe, aged 86 years, passed away on December 27, 2003, at his home in Morden, MB. He was born on October 26, 1917, in Winnipeg, MB. He moved with his parents to Macklin, SK, at the age of two. During 1937 the family, now consisting of 11 children, moved back to Manitoba to settle on a farm near Lundar. Most of his young adult life was spent around the Poplar Point and Portage area. Dad worked as a fireman at the Portage Air Base-7AOS until starting with the Manitoba Government Highways Dept. in 1945. His marriage to Jane Wistoski took place in Winnipeg on September 16, 1940. They resided in Portage until moving to Morden with daughter Gail in 1948 to take up the duties of Foreman of the Highways Department which he enjoyed until retiring in October 1982. While living in Morden he served on the volunteer Fire Department for many years and one year as the president. He was also active in the Royal Canadian Legion No. 1, serving as Chairman of the Entertainment Committee for many years and helped with the weekly bingo. Dad also served on the board of St. Thomas Anglican Church as Peoples Warden. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, becoming Noble Grand, a duty he was very proud of. He was on the board of the Morden Beach Committee, as well as working with his wife as caretakers of the beach for five years. He leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory one daughter Gail and Frank Dabbs of Kelowna, BC; three sons, Garry and Sandra of Penticton, BC, Glenn and Terrie of Winnipeg, Gregg and Belinda of Winnipeg; six grandchildren, Shawn, Joel, Christopher and Dawn, children of Garry; and Sandra and Stephen and Jodine Leiding, children of Gail; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Jane on November 9, 1998. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, December 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Thomas Anglican Church, Morden, with Rev. Brian Minnaker and Rev. Ed Maddock. Interment was held on Hillside Cemetery, Morden. Memorial donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. We would like to extend our special thanks to doctors and staff of the Boundary Trails Health Centre for all the care and comfort provided to Dad. Thank-you as well to the Legion Honour Guard for your support and the Ladies Auxiliary for the lunch provided. The family would also like to express sincere appreciation to the homecare staff of the Legion House No. 1 for your care and kindness shown to our dad.
