THOMAS (TOMMY) ARCHIBALD SIGFUSSON It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Tommy Sigfusson. Following a wonderful Christmas spent with family and friends, he passed away in his home on December 30, 2003. Tommy was predeceased by his wife Viola in 1981; his parents, Skuli and Gudrun; his brothers, Arthur, Svein and Skuli; and his sister Loa. He is survived by his sister Olaf; brother Siggi; children, Allan (Joanne), Robert (Carolyn), Terry (Wendy), Beverley (Ken), Richard and Bradley; grandchildren, Kris and Kal; Michael, Matt and Amy; Jackie, Tim and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Dawson and Devon. Tommy was born March 22, 1928 in Lundar, MB on the last day of a spring storm. He grew up on the family farm and then moved to Winnipeg to pursue his education. He attended the University of Manitoba where he graduated with a degree in Agriculture in 1951. Tom married Viola Ditchfield the same year and they moved to North Dakota where he shared his agricultural knowledge with local farmers as their teacher. Tom and Viola also started their family, having three sons (Allan, Robert and Terry) during their time in North Dakota. With Toms heart still in Canada the family returned five years later to reside in Winnipeg. Tommy joined his brothers, Svein and Skuli, at Sigfusson Transportation Company and increased his family with a daughter Beverley and two more sons, Richard and Bradley. Dads life revolved around many years of building winter roads to the northern communities in Manitoba and Ontario. He loved his work and shared many stories of time spent being one of the pioneers of construction of winter roads. In order for Dad to provide for his large family he had to spend many months in the wilderness. When not up north, Dad enjoyed spending his leisure time with his family at Lundar Beach. He will always be remembered for flying his Cessna onto the lake and providing rides to the beach residents. Dad always had a boat and motor for us to use and a barrel full of gas. Dad had many friends and family in Lundar and the surrounding areas. He immensely enjoyed sharing stories with the local patrons. After retirement, our time with Dad became very valuable and special. He was always available to lend a helping hand and his family knew they could count on his support in a crisis. He enjoyed his Saturday cribbage games at the Charleswood Hotel and attended every week for the past five years. He was also a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 50 years. Dads favourite day of the year was Boxing Day. He knew that this was a day that his children and grandchildren would all be together. One of Dads favourite past times was tinkering with old machinery from tractors to lawnmowers. He enjoyed the challenge of getting something to work no matter how much time it consumed. Fishing and hunting with his sons and grandchildren was a great source of pleasure for him. In the last six years, Dad had the opportunity to witness the transition of his once farmland into the development of Little Mountain Sportsplex. Many hours of enjoyment were spent driving his old Farm All Tractor to help maintain the fields. Dad will forever have a special place in the "fields of dreams" as it continues to grow. Viewing will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, January 2, 2004 at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at First Lutheran Church, 780 Victor St. Interment at Clarkleigh Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be the Sigfusson grandchildren, Kris, Kal, Mike, Matt, Tim and Ryan. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1P6. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
