HAZEL SCHMIDT (nee McGILLVRAY) Peacefully on December 30, 2003 at Seven Oaks General Hospital, Hazel Schmidt passed away at the age of 67, after battling a lengthy illness. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Don; and her sons and daughter-in-law, Donald, Michael and Carolyn. Hazel also leaves to mourn her passing one brother, Wes McGillvray; four sisters, Marlene Gunn, Annie McGillvray, Loretta Dixon, and Janis Mclean; and one stepsister, Elaine Carlson; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Hazel was born October 20, 1936 in the Orangeville district of Macgregor, MB to parents Viola (McAskie) and Jack McGillvray. She grew up in Austin, MB and after graduating from High School moved to Portage La Prairie where she received her Registered Psychiatric nursing degree with honours. She later received her LPN degree and continued her nursing career in Hamilton, ON and at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. She married Don Schmidt in 1969 and eventually moved to Grand Marais, MB, where they were blessed with their two sons, Donald and Michael, who were always her pride and joy. Hazel enjoyed music, singing, dancing, and the company of good friends and family. Even though Hazel had fought many illnesses during her life and especially the disease that finally took her life, she always had a very deep faith and belief in Gods promises. Family and friends were important to Hazel and they were always in her thoughts and prayers. She was a very caring, loving, compassionate and forgiving person. A celebration of Hazels life will be held on Monday, January 5 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, with Pastor Neill Stitt officiating. Interment to follow at Jackfish Lake Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Dr. Crawford and the wonderful staff at Seven Oaks Hospital for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hazels memory to CancerCare MB, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
