GUDRUN CHRISTINE HALLING (HANSEN) (nee JOHNSON) (originally JOHNSEN) October 22, 1911 - December 31, 2003 Peacefully, on Wednesday, December 31, 2003, Gudrun passed away at the River East Personal Care Home at the age of 92 years. Gudrun was predeceased by her parents, Eilert and Petra Johnson; infant daughter Norma Hansen (1937) sister-in-law Gertie Johnson (1986) brother-in-law Harold Young (1992) son-in-law Boris Romanow (1997) and brother Norman Johnson (2003). She is survived by her daughter Doreen Romanow of Winnipeg; son Gerald (June) Hansen of Parksville, BC; son Donald (Cathy) Halling of Ottawa. Her grandchildren, Richard (Sharon) Romanow of Winnipeg, Carol (Bernie) Mazur of Winnipeg, Jim (Peggy) Hansen of BC, Norman Hansen of BC, Kristine (Jamie) Sandluck on ON, Ted Halling and Wyman Halling of Ottawa. Also, she leaves her great-grandchildren, Sarah and Randall Romanow, Scott Mazur, Sydney and Justin Sandluck, and Heather Hansen. She leaves to mourn her passing her sister Alice Young of Chilliwack, BC and brother Erling (Audrey) of Willowdale, ON, and many nieces, nephews and relatives in Norway. Her life-long friend, Mary Wells of Winnipeg and many friends will also miss her. Gudrun was born in Duluth, MN. She immigrated to Winnipeg with her family in 1912. Since then she has resided in several places, Inwood, MB, Winnipeg, MB, Fort Frances, ON, Chilliwack, BC, and Selkirk, MB. Since November 1996, she has resided at the River East P.C.H. in Winnipeg. Gudrun was trained as a hairdresser and barber. She opened her own salons, one in Fort Frances in 1955 and the other in Inwood in 1969. In Fort Frances she was involved with the Eastern Star Evergreen Chpt #80 and held the position of "Worthy Matron" in 1965-1966. Gudrun enjoyed working on crafts, and was especially meticulous at needlepoint. She loved animals, and had many pets during her lifetime. Her love of music was also very evident, she had a beautiful singing voice and loved to sing in the church choir, and with family and friends. The family thanks the nurses, caregivers, management and many others, from the River East Personal Care Home, who provided a good, caring and happy home for Gudrun. Special thanks to the "B Wing" staff who were like family to her, and for their wonderful and compassionate care they provided. Gudrun was happy there and she especially enjoyed singing to the "Golden Oldies". A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St. with Pastor Mark Scott officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
