Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELMUT HERMAN SCHAETZLE October 3, 1938- December 31, 2003 Following a lengthy illness (Picks Disease - a progressive dementia), Helmut passed away on December 31, 2003. Born in Weyburn, SK, on October 3, 1938, he moved with his parents to Kenora, ON, while still a toddler. He attended elementary and junior high school in Kenora and moved with his parents to Red Deer, AB, where he completed his high school education. He later pursued university studies at Concordia College in North Dakota. Helmut moved to Winnipeg early in the 1960s and continued to make his home in the Winnipeg area until his passing. After 25 years of service, Helmut took early retirement from Molson Breweries (Carling - OKeefe). Through his years at the brewery, he was active on most of the committees....labour negotiations, workplace safety and health, etc., as well as participating in the social activities of fishing and curling with his fellow workers. Though earning his livelihood at the brewery, his first love was music. Helmut was involved in music for the better part of his life. The recipient of several bursaries and awards, he was an accomplished pianist and self-taught organist. He served as the organist and choir director at Sherwood Park Lutheran Church for 28 years, for several years was the chorus director of the Winnipeg Chapter Sweet Adelines, and for many years taught both piano and organ students from his home. Helmut was a Past Master of Fort Garry Masonic Lodge No. 130 and for several years following his duties as an officer of the lodge, served in the capacity of organist for both Fort Garry and the Millenium Masonic Lodge. His comment to many was, "My wife and I are best friends," and over their many years together, were constant companions as they enjoyed attending music events, sports events, camping, fishing and home gardening. As well, both committed volunteers, they were always involved with several organizations and community projects at any given time. As the Picks Disease progressed, Helmut was obliged to accept placement into personal care. In September 2002, he became a resident at the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg where he resided until his passing. To the Adult Day Program, nursing/health care aides staff and social activities staff, a sincere thank you for the excellent care given during his months at the home. Predeceased by his parents Herman and Sarah, Helmut leaves to mourn his passing his wife Helen Rae; his sister Mrs. Irma Milko of Kenora; two nephews, three nieces, their spouses and children, all residing in Ontario. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Sherwood Park Lutheran Church, London Street and Tudor Crescent in East Kildonan at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2004, with Pastor Tom Lurvey officiating. Service will terminate with a reception following at the church. A private interment will take place at a future date in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial donations to the Music Fund, Sherwood Park Lutheran Church or to another charity of your choice would be sincerely appreciated. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
