RICHARD (DICK) STEWART MACKAY "Sarge" Peacefully, after a short illness and surrounded by his family, Dick Mackay passed away January 5, 2004 at the age of 77 years. Predeceased by his father William, mother Margaret, brother George, sister Sheena Calver and nephew Stuart Calver. Dick is survived by Barbara, his wife of nearly 50 years, his daughters Kathleen Mackay of Winnipeg and Heather Tak (John) of Vancouver and his son Kevin Mackay (Joyce) of Winnipeg. Sarge was also a wonderful Grandpa/Pom-pom to his beloved and loving "BIC kids" - Beth Mackay, Ian Tak and Cameron Mackay. Dick also leaves his brothers-in-law Jim Calver of Devon, England and David Finnamore of Toronto, sister-in-law Rose Mackay of Winnipeg and nieces and nephews Maureen Kusyk, Gordon Mackay and Kathilyn Pettinger, all of Winnipeg, Linda Calver of Devon, England, Donna Preston, Doug Finnamore and Debbie Lavelle, all of B.C. and cousin Jean Macpherson of Winnipeg. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1926, Dick emigrated to Canada in 1951. Along with brother George, Dick played soccer in those early days in Winnipeg. It was at a soccer game that Dick met Barbara, the girl with the big black Dodge. They married shortly after and moved back to Glasgow. Life in Canada beckoned and the family of three returned to Winnipeg for good in 1955. Dick joined the East Kildonan Police Department in 1958 and retired from the Winnipeg Police Service as a Patrol Sergeant in 1986. Dick was the self-appointed driver on numerous family road trips across Canada and the U.S. Later, he and Barbara enjoyed visits with family in Scotland, Ireland, and England and headed for adventures in New Zealand, Tahiti, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Sarge was a proud and determined man to the end - in charge of all his decisions and only needing our support to carry them through. He was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend. We will miss him. The family wishes to thank all of the doctors and nurses of the intensive care units of St. Boniface Hospital, Grace Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre for their special care and kindness. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 12 at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, R3A 1P6, the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, R3C 0S6 or, to a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN EDEN FUNERAL HOME 4477 MAIN STREET 338-7111
