LEILA MAE POWELL (nee GIBBONS) Peacefully on January 5, 2004, Leila passed away at Concordia Hospital. She is sadly missed by her daughter, Sharon (Mark) Ulrich of Walsenburg, CO; and son David (Jodi) Powell of Aurora, CO; and sister Shirley Goerzen of Winnipeg. She will be lovingly remembered by grandchildren, Danny Ulrich and Scott, Nicole and Allison Powell; and nephews Larry (Karen) Goerzen and children Mark, Kayla and Owen, and Brad (Leslie) Goerzen and children Riley and Zachary, as well as many relatives and friends. Leila is predeceased by parents Olive and Laurence Gibbons and brother-in-law Peter Goerzen. Leila was born in Winnipeg on June 23, 1927 and lived in Winnipeg, Thunder Bay and Toronto while raising her family. She returned to Winnipeg in 1975 when she began working in the records and statistics division of the Winnipeg Police Department. Mom spent seventeen years there and took great pride in her work and the people she was privileged to work with. She retired from her supervisory position there in 1992. Retirement provided Mom the opportunity to devote time to pursuing her many interests which included travel, reading, volunteer work and trips to the casino. Favourite destinations were Colorado and Arizona. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Hwy., East Kildonan, following a private cremation. The family has requested that those who desire make donations to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2, or the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9, in Moms name. The family also wishes to thank the staff of Concordia Hospital, ER, for the kindness and compassionate care they provided to Mom and her family.
