Date of Passing: Jan 08, 2004
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANNA (NELLIE) MELNYK Anna Melnyk passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord on January 8, 2004, at the age of 93 years. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Wasyl; three brothers and two sisters. She is survived and deeply missed by her much loved twin daughters, Kathy Leochko and Mary MacLean; her devoted son-in-law Tony Leochko and her beloved granddaughters, Susan (Gerry) Messner, Trish (Russ) and great-grandson Cody Bragg; Valerie (Steve) Dyck and Ruth Anne MacLean (fiance Ron Hiller). Anna was born in the Province of Sokal in Western Ukraine on January 14, 1910. Coming to Canada in 1924, a young 14 year old girl accompanied by her 22 year old sister Joanna, she created a new life for herself based on deep spiritual values. Like many immigrants, she was denied the benefit of an education, but managed to overcome the language barrier and find employment as a live-in housekeeper/domestic. This experience shaped her character as a strong, very sensible and independent woman. She met and married Wasyl, gave birth to her twins and, finally, in 1941, had her very own home. Anna was a pioneer member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral and a devoted member of the UCWLC. A deeply Christian woman, she placed great importance on family connections and visiting the sick. In Annas final years, in a dark and silent world, she was the epitome of stoicism and grace, accepting and uncomplaining and the model of politeness to the end. The legacy she leaves is the example she set and for this, we her family, feel truly blessed. The family would like to extend deepest thanks and appreciation to Dr. Taras Babick and the staff of Holy Family Nursing Home for their exemplary and compassionate care. May God bless all of you. Prayers will be sung at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 11 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 12 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. with Rev. M. Kouts officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. If desired, donations to Holy Family Nursing Home would be appreciated.
