EVELYN BERINSTEIN Evelyn (Evy) Berinstein, beloved devoted wife of Max, mother of Roxy Freedman (Martin), Edward (Mariette), Neil (Corinne), and sister of Veta Monson and Thelma Travis; loving grandmother of Jacqueline, Karyn, Lisa, Stephanie, Nicol, Rachel, Jeffrey, Elliot, Andrew and Zachary; very proud great-grandmother of Ethan and Talia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on January 9, 2004 at the Victoria General Hospital. She will be extraordinarily missed by her entire family. Evy was born in Winnipeg in 1921, first daughter of Sarah and Max Travis. She grew up in the north end of Winnipeg and married Max Berinstein in 1941, and they remained lifelong devoted partners for 62 years. Her early married life included an exciting courtship on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, travel across Canada during the Second World War and the establishment of many enduring friendships. She gave birth to her daughter in 1942, followed by the birth of her two sons in 1947 and in 1954. Evy loved people and especially delighted in being with her friends and family. She was known for her lovely dinner parties and joyful family celebrations. Her events were not to be missed and her countless recipes were cherished by all. A speech by Evy highlighted each family event. Evy could be counted on to provide the right advice for all situations. Her wisdom guided the actions and paths of her entire family over the years and has defined the values that have influenced their lives. This is her greatest legacy. Her final years were marred by a chronic debilitating illness. Despite this, her zest for life and her love of family kept her a part of everything. Indeed, her indomitable spirit, her courage and her will to live have been an inspiration to everyone who has known her. She will be sadly missed but she will always live on vividly in the hearts, minds and actions of her loving family. Many thanks to Dr. Wayne Manishen for his continued care, and to Dr. Richard Greene and all the staff at the Victoria General Hospital for their kind attention. Thanks also to Home Care Services for their ongoing support. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 561 Wellington Cres., Winnipeg. Contributions may be made to the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue or any other charity of your choice.
