SHEILA SMITH-SALTZBERG December 27, 1941- January 10, 2004 Zestful to the very end, Sheila passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the age of 62. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Walter Saltzberg, son Grant Smith, daughter-in-law Rhonda Dolman-Smith, grandson Jared; her mother Pearl Greenberg, father Israel Greenberg; sisters, Jan Jones, Lisa Shipley, Mischa Greenberg; brother Alan Greenberg, sister-in-law Karen Somerville; Walters children, George, Jack and Anna Saltzberg; beloved nieces and nephews; her sons in-laws, Howard and Ethel Dolman and family and good friend John Shipley. Sheila, a native of Ottawa, graduated from Carlton University with a degree of Bachelor of Arts and from Algonquin College with a diploma in Museum Technology. She accomplished this as a mature student and a full time mom. She began her career as a conservator with Parks Canada, originally in Ottawa and later in Winnipeg, specializing in conservation and restoration of wood artifacts. Some of her work can still be seen at Lower Fort Garry and Riel House, as well as across Western Canada and the former Territories. Sheila was very accomplished and proud of her role as a woman in a non-traditional profession. Sheilas imagination had no bounds. She used it in all aspects of her life: from remodelling hers and her childrens homes and the Gimli trailer; to changing, adapting, and creating new patterns for never ending knitting projects; and to helping friends in their quest for suggestions on the repair and refinishing of furniture and in decorating options. Till illness robbed her of her strength, she always had a project on the go. Outside of her family, in particular her grandson, Jared, Sheilas greatest joy was savouring the accomplishments of Jennifer, her Little Sister. Her sense of humour was well known and pity was felt for anyone who dared to engage her in trading of puns. She will be missed greatly. Funeral services will be held at Congregation Etz Chayim, 123 Matheson Ave. at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13. The family would like to extend special thanks to all of the staff at CancerCare Manitoba, both at the MacCharles Unit and the St. Boniface Unit, and particularly the Palliative Care Unit at the St. Boniface Hospital for all their care and kindness shown to Sheila. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in Sheilas memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 109 - 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
