CAREY MARIE (nee: DOMES) HALMRAST Peacefully, on January 10, 2004 at the St. Boniface Palliative Care unit, Winnipeg, Carey passed away at the age of 39 years with her family at her side. Showing courage, dignity and concern for others during her lengthy battle with cancer. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Keith; children, Megan, Alexandra and Tyler; parents, Art and Mary Domes; brothers, Dan (Alice) and David (Laurie) Domes; sister Patricia (Randy) Perchak; brothers-in-law, Floyd (Carolynn) and Wayne (Rhonda) Halmrast; sisters-in-law, Cathy (Eric) Bianchi and Sheila (James) Heal; as well as her 16 nieces and nephews, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Carey had a great sense of humour, a quick, easy smile with dancing blue eyes, an easy laughter and a genuine concern for others, which gained her many friends and earned their deepest respect. She was an inspiration to those who knew and loved her. She was born in Regina, SK on January 15, 1964, and at an early age moved to Portage la Prairie. As a youth in Portage, Carey kept active with school and sports, with Explorers and C.G.I.T and as a teen choir member and volunteer in Trinity United Church. Following graduation from Arthur Meighen High School in Portage, Carey worked for a time at an Arabian horse ranch near Taber, AB. There she met Keith, who would soon become her husband and life partner. Carey and Keith moved to Manitoba to marry, settle, and start a family. Selkirk became home to Carey and her family in 1995. She also volunteered in her childrens school and shared her good humour and warm, caring nature with her clients at Arc Industries, and with the children she cared for in the daycare she operated from her home. As a valued employee at Gage Marketing, she filled the role of technical consultant until forced to leave because of failing health. Community Service as a member of the Selkirk PEO (Philanthopic Educational Opportunities) became an important part of Careys life. The bonds she developed with her PEO sisters did much to sustain and comfort her during her illness. In so many ways, family and friends will miss Carey deeply. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk with Rev. barb janes officiating. As an expression of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Careys memory to the Palliative Care Endowment Fund, St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation, 409 Tache Ave., Rm D1 003, Winnipeg, MB, R2H 2A6 or CancerCare Manitoba, Rm ON 1160, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9 or Manitoba PEO Foundation, 1030-1750 Pembina Hwy.
