MICHAEL DENNIS FUNKE It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of our husband and dad, Michael Funke, aged 60, on Saturday, January 10, 2004. Michael is survived by his loving wife Karen (nee North) of 35 years; daughters, Kelly (Kelly Eldridge), Kirstin (Jim Robinson) and Melissa (John Minkevich) his mother Audrey; brothers and sisters, Larry (Darlene), Anne Pleasance, Elaine, Alvin (Sonja), Peggy Jenner (Hugh), Dale (Janice) and Marie MacLean (Kraig) mother-in-law Dorothy North; many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Michael touched many young lives in his years of teaching at Grosvenor School in Winnipeg, Roland Elementary School and Carman Elementary School. He also devoted much extra-curricular time to coaching golf, softball, cross-country skiing and ringette, where he coached all three of his daughters. Michael loved the camaraderie and competition of sports, cherishing the friendships he developed through sport. He spent the most time and effort on golf as a player, organizer, member of the Carman Golf Club Executive and golf ball "hawk." He also loved cross-country skiing, beginning as an adult, teaching his kids as he learned, competing and mentoring many young competitors. He also loved Ski Birch and assisted in the development and maintenance of the ski trails and organizing competitions. Michael loved his community, its history and its future. He enthusiastically served as Chairman of the Carman and Dufferin Heritage Committee and saw the opening of the Sexsmith Morgan log house last year, which he helped reconstruct. Michaels other community involvement included Kinsmen Club, the Knights of Columbus and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church. Michaels sense of community, love of life and unique sense of humour will be greatly missed by everyone around him. Funeral service will be held from Friends Community Church in Carman on Thursday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m. with Father Ed Kosa O.M.I. officiating. Prayers will be said from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Carman on Wednesday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may me made to the Carman Area Foundation Inc., Box 160, Carman, MB R0G 0J0, or to Birch Mountain Resort, in care of Victor Schapellaz, Notre Dame, MB. Doyles Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements. www.doyleschapels.com
