Date of Passing: Jan 11, 2004
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH WARKENTIN (nee PETERS) 1908 - 2004 Peacefully on January 11, 2004 Mom went to be with her Lord after a brief stay at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach at the age of 95 years. She is survived by four daughters and one son. Mary (Peter) Block, Lydia Mathes, Edith (Peter) Nikkel, Helga (Frank) Froese, Harold (Marlene) Warkentin, many stepchildren; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. One sister Katie Peters. She was predeceased by her first husband George Warkentin in 1950; her second husband Jacob A. Klassen in 1976; and her third husband Jacob Warkentin January 9, 2004; her son Ernie in 1956; one grandson Terry Block in 1995. Mother was born to Isaak and Elizabeth Peters on January 23, 1908 in South Russia (now Ukraine). She was the eighth of 13 children. At age 17 because of war and famine she immigrated to Canada together with her parents and siblings. She was married to our dad in 1931. Six children were born to them. Life was a struggle during the years of the great depression, but mother being resourceful and energetic, provided for her family. Her cooking, baking, canning and making-over hand-me-downs kept us fed and clothed. She knew sorrow as Dad was taken from us in 1950 after a three year illness with leukemia. Six years later her older son Ernie drowned at age 20. After 19 years of widowhood she was married to Jacob Klassen. This marriage only lasted eight years, but they were wonderful years for her. After his death there came a time of adjustment, several moves and she married again, this time to our uncle Jacob Warkentin. He predeceased her by two days. Mom could be found with some item of handiwork such as knitting, crocheting, quilting or sewing. Her children and grandchildren will cherish her labour of love. Her joy was her family and get-togethers with them. Her faith in her Lord Jesus sustained her throughout her life and we firmly believe she now sees in whom she believed. Service will be held Friday, January 16 at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, Loewen Blvd., Steinbach at 2:00 p.m. with viewing one hour prior to the service. Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Cedarwood Apt. and the staff and Dr. Toews at Bethesda Hospital. Special thanks to Mary Penner and Suse Wiens who "saw her off" with singing. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to MCC. Arrangements entrusted to LOEWEN Funeral Chapel 5 Chrysler Gate - Steinbach - 326-1351
