MATHILDA (TILLIE) HAGGLUND (nee WERNER) Tillie, the last surviving child of Samuel and Juliana (nee Karras) Werner of Grahamdale, Manitoba, died on Thursday, January 15, 2004 at the Victoria General Hospital. Tillie was born on the farm in Grahamdale on February 22, 1915. She was baptized at home, and later confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Grahamdale. Tillie came to Winnipeg at age 18 and obtained work as a domestic. Through loyalty to the Fetterman family she returned to Grahamdale to assist them until they passed away. She then returned to Winnipeg and found employment within the hotel industry including the Royal Alex Hotel. She also worked for President Sidney Smith of the University of Manitoba. Tillie met her husband Carl at the Swedish Dance Hall in 1942 and they were married on June 16, 1945. She is lovingly remembered and survived by twin daughters June (David Weind), Joann (Gary Wensel), sons John (Cheryll Duquette) and Algot; grandchildren Kirsten (James Matthews), Sarah, Mark, Marla, Karras and Anders as well as sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews, in both Sweden and Canada. She was a member of Vasa Lodge for 25 years, and a long time member of the Swedish Oldtimers, Independent Order of Foresters, Sylvia Recreation, and Folklorama. Tillie volunteered at the Home and School Association, Cub Scouts, Meals on Wheels, MTC, the 1967 Pan AM Games and was a Girl Guide leader. She visited the sick at the Misericordia Hospital and at long-term care facilities. On June 16, 1988 Tillie went to Ottawa to receive the Canadian Volunteer Award and on April 15, 1997 she received the Premiers Award. She also received an award for 40 years of volunteer service with the Age and Opportunity Centre. Tillie was a former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and participated over the years in the Womens Inter-Lutheran Church Council. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 19, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 600 Cambridge Street, with Pastor Rick Sauer officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o 1155 Wilkes Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3P 1B9 or to St. Marks Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 600 Cambridge Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3M 3G9.
