EDWARD ALBERT (TED) HEWINS On Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at the Portage District General Hospital, Edward Albert (Ted) Hewins of rural Portage, beloved husband of Muriel Hewins, passed away at the age of 76 years, following a short illness. Funeral service will be held at the Highway Tabernacle, 1680 Saskatchewan Ave. W., Portage la Prairie, MB, Saturday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Dave Heasler officiating. A private family interment of the cremated remains will follow in the Bowes family plot at Hillside Cemetery. Ted was born on October 31, 1927, son of Edward and Annie Hewins in Winnipeg. The family moved to Portage la Prairie where he was raised and received his education. After his fathers passing, at the age of 15, he started his working life to help support his mother and family. In 1948 Ted married Muriel Bowes. He was employed as a mechanic for Lyons Garage, Grant Brown International, Delta Motors, Bowes & Herron Chev Olds, and also Pappys Service with his oldest son Garry, both at Fort St. John, BC. In 1968 they purchased the Earl Bowes farm and then commuted between Fort St. John and Portage for seven years. They moved in 1975 to settle in Portage where they farmed until their retirement in 1991. He stayed active in the farm operation with his son Darren until the present. In those years he taught Darren many of his mechanical abilities and worked with Darren in the Millwork. During his retirement he came to love growing gladiola - he started with 25 bulbs and before his passing he ended up with 12,000 bulbs. He enjoyed taking flowers to the farmers market, hospital, Douglas Campbell Lodge, Lions Prairie Manor and flower shops, bringing joy to all who received them on an annual basis. Farming didnt stop at flowers - but continued in his raspberry bushes, huge garden and into lilies and roses. In the earlier years, Ted was active with the Boy Scout Movement, and also with St. Marys la Prairie Anglican Church, and later with Highway Tabernacle. Predeceased by his parents; infant brother; and one sister Lillian Durnin. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 55 years, Muriel; his children, Garry Hewins, Wanda and Merlin Gerber, all of Fort St. John, Shannon Hewins of Calgary, Dwain Hewins, Darren and Candace Hewins, all of Portage la Prairie, David and Shawna Porter of Fisher River; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; also surviving is one brother Ken (Fay) of Brandon; four sisters, Jeanne (Andy) Anderson of Ontario, Anne (Bob) Knight of Red Deer, Ada Henderson of Ottawa and Marjorie (Don) Coubrough of Portage la Prairie; and several nieces and nephews.
