THERESA KOSTIUK Peacefully, on Friday, January 16, 2004 Theresa Kostiuk passed away at age 87. Theresa was born January 28, 1916 in Nizhniv, Ukraine in the District of Stanislaviv, Western Ukraine. She was predeceased by her siblings Wasyl, Maria, Dmitro and Theodor in Ukraine, her sister Sophia of Winnipeg and her beloved husband Wasyl. In her young adult life Theresa heeded a religious calling by entering a convent in Ukraine and subsequently in Belgium. Here she received her education. She was fluent in five languages. During the Second World War she helped in the Resistance effort providing refuge to those in need by hiding and protecting them within the convent walls. Post-war, Theresa returned to secular life and shortly after, in Brussels, met and married Wasyl Kostiuk. They immigrated to Canada in 1951 where Theresa worked as a labourer and volunteered on numerous committees in the Ukrainian community in Winnipeg and in Thunder Bay. She enjoyed embroidering Ukrainian costumes, singing in the church and community choirs, participating in social and religious events, and teaching her children the songs and customs of her homeland. Theresa was independent, protective, caring, playful and generous. She felt an unshakable religious joy throughout her life, and loved beauty and nature. She cultivated a lovely garden and enjoyed hiking in the woods to harvest edibles like mushrooms and blueberries. And, nothing delighted her more than to surprise her family with gifts. Theresa loved her family deeply and leaves to cherish her memory daughter Stephanie and her spouse David Miles, daughter Orysia and her spouse John Budyk, and grandchildren, Greg Miles and Matthew and Leah Budyk. She will also be missed by her brother-in-law Wasyl Welhasch, nephew Stephan, nieces, Marika and Irka and their families; and nieces and nephews in Toronto and the Ukraine. Prayers will be sung 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 20. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 21. Both to be held at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. with Rev. M. Kouts officiating. A reception will be held after prayers Tuesday in the church hall next door. Pallbearers will be Matthew, Garry and Kenny Budyk, Greg Miles, Harry Szkwarek and Stephan Welhasch. The family wishes to thank Dr. I. Mohammed and Dr. Phil Katz for their tender care of our mother, and our friends and relatives for their support.
