TOM McKELVIE 1922 - 2004 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas McKelvie, on January 12, 2004 at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, with family and close friends by his side. Tom was born in Mossend, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1922. He accompanied his parents along with his sister Jessie on the long journey to Kenora in 1927. Tom attended school and began his working career in Kenora, before volunteering for service in the Royal Canadian Navy. He was proud to serve Canada in the Second World War as a gunner on a landing craft, operating in the English Channel. He fought off the coast of France during the invasion at Normandy. Tom married the love of his life, Edna Hodkinson in 1947. Together they resided in Keewatin, happily sharing their love of gardening, travelling, pets and the cottage on Lake of the Woods and raising their only child Shaughn. Tom developed his skills as a butcher early in his career in the grocery business. When the opportunity came along, he and Edna took up the challenge of running the IGA in Keewatin. Together with their daughter Shaughn, they operated McKelvies IGA for over 30 years until their retirement in 1993. In his younger days, Tom enjoyed curling as a member of the Keewatin Curling Club. Recently Tom was honoured with his 55 year pin from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #13, Keewatin. Tom was predeceased by his wife Edna in 1999; his father James in 1966; his mother Janet in 1983; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Dorothy and Walter Hodkinson; his brother-in-law John Laliberte and his nephew Kevin Laliberte. Tom will be greatly missed by his daughter Shaughn and Wayne Leduc of Keewatin; his sister Jessie Laliberte of Winnipeg; his nephews, Noel, Denis, David and Tom Laliberte and their families; his cousin Cathy Foster and her family; many other friends, relatives and former associates in Kenora and Winnipeg, as well as relatives abroad. We will all miss Toms quick wit, his boyish charm, his sense of humour and that ever-present twinkle in his eye; but we will never forget his kindness, his generosity, his loyalty to his friends and the depth of his love and devotion to his family. Cremation has taken place. At Toms request, there will be no funeral service. Interment will take place at a later date. If so desired, donations in Toms memory may be made to the charity of your choice. On line condolences may be made at kcfh@voyageur.ca Kenora Community Funeral Home (807) 547-6000 \r
