PHILIP CARSON HUNTLEY After a full and rewarding life, Carson passed away peacefully on January 15, 2004 at the Victoria General Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents and this two brothers. Carson was born in Montreal in 1913. The family moved to the United States where he remained until he graduated from the University of Virginia with a masters degree in history. Carson moved to England from where he travelled extensively in Europe and the Middle East. He was teaching English in Greece at the outbreak of the Second World War and he was conscripted by the British Army as a translator. When the British fled from Greece in the early 1940s, Carsons unit retreated by ship across the Mediterranean Sea to Cairo, where he was decommissioned. Thus began the happiest years of teaching in his life, when he was hired by the English School in Cairo to teach English and French. After the war, upon the death of his mother, he returned to the United States where he taught in various schools. Carson came to Manitoba in 1969 and taught at both Hugh John MacDonald and Grant Park High School until his retirement. After his retirement, he spent many happy years cultivating his love of music, art, history, languages and travel. He will be affectionately remembered and greatly missed by his many friends. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Carsons life will be held at Leatherdale Gardiner, 1858 Portage Ave. on January 29 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 1X3.
