Phil will be lovingly remembered by his five children, Phyllis (Nick) Shindak of Winnipeg, David Stattin of Alberta, Wallianna (Doug) Sheardown of the Yukon, Randy (Debbie) Stattin of Alberta, Lori (Brian) Cruickshank of Winnipeg; 13 grandchildren, Duane (Debbie) and Judy Richardson, Susan (Greg) Deppendorf, Kevin Shindak, Karen Shindak (Gary Bluschke), Colleen (Ryan) Barr, Jason Stattin, Gerald and Christopher Sheardown, Gregory and Jonathan Stattin, Kayla and Adam Cruickshank; great-grandchildren, Kim, Kerrie, Kayla, Justine, Shea, Sara, Taylor, Kaitlin, Alanna and Chase; brother Joseph Nahuliak of British Columbia; sister-in-law Lena Nahuliak of Manitoba; as well as numerous relatives. Phil was born in Winnipeg and moved to Red Rose, MB, when he was three years old. He attended Fisher River, Sunny Valley and Northland Schools, completing Grade 6. Being the oldest of five boys, Phil was sent out to work at the age of 14 as a bull-cook at Birth Point on Lake Winnipeg. He went to Erickson, MB, as a general labourer, meeting his wife Helen Oleniuk and marrying in 1934. In 1936 they moved to Koostatak, MB, where they owned Stattins Ltd. for 46 years. The business consisted of a general store, trucking, farming, lumber and pulpwood, fishing and furs. In building his business he was grateful to employ many family members and the people of Fisher River in one capacity or another. As a fair and respected employer and friend, he was referred to as "Mr. Stattin" or just "Stattin" or "The Boss." Phil was a founding member and supporter of St. Michaels U.C. Church at Red Rose and St. Josephs U.C. Church, Winnipeg. He worked very hard in providing equipment, labour, and raising funds for both churches. When he retired Phil looked forward to working at the Thursday night bingo with the St. Josephs Mens Club. Phil also belonged to the Seniors Club, working on projects such as "The Perogy Bee," and he was also a member of Knights of Columbus-St. Josaphat Council No.4138 since 1958. Our father and grandfather was a quiet, silent, gentle, hardworking man who never complained during all his years of pain. He was a "jack of all trades" who loved to cook, garden, give directions, play cards, help with garage sales and go to the casino. He wasnt much for conversation but gave us a listening ear and watched our goings on with love. In later years, he also surprised us daily with his sense of humour and willingness to live. Phil was predeceased by his mother Marcella; and stepfather Filip Nahuliak; wife Helen; daughter Julia; and son-in-law Alex Richardson; brothers, John, Tony (Anne), Mike (Dora) and sister-in-law Mamie Nahuliak. The family would like to thank the caring staff of Vista Park Lodge and Misericordia Health Centre, Mark (homecare) and the doctors. Prayers will be said on Wednesday, January 21 at 8:00 p.m. at St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, January 22 at 10:00 a.m. also at St. Josephs. Interment at Green Acres Memorial Gardens on Navin Road. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Phils memory to an organization of your choice. Just a prayer from us who love you A precious memory kind and true To us you were someone special And God must have thought so too Dear Lord, put Your arms around him Hold him in your tender care Comfort him for all he suffered And love him until we get there.
