BEN ARTHUR SHUCKETT Ben Arthur Shuckett passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, January 20, 2004. He was predeceased by his loving wife Dorothy in 1986. Ben and Dorothy were married in 1938 and enjoyed 48 wonderful years together. Ben is survived by his children, Marcia and Ken Brookler and Paul and Margaret Shuckett; his grandchildren, Richard and Debbie Brookler, Jill and Alejandro Knopoff, Brent and Meghan Brookler, Nicole and Avi Pollock and Cara Shuckett; his great-grandchildren, Adara, Zachary and Gabriella Brookler, Morgana and Dustin Knopoff and Lev Pollock. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Fritzie and Gene Telpner, Esther and Manuel Lecker, Morley and Sally Shuckett; sister-in-law Bert Shuckett; and brother-in-law Jack Cohen. Ben was born on November 23, 1905 in Pokotilov, Russia to Jacob and Rachel Shuckett. His family came to Canada in 1912. His life in Canada started in Winnipeg and after living in Fork River, MB for several years he returned to Winnipeg in 1921. Ben attended the University of Manitoba and received his BA in 1928. He graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1931 and continued to practice law well into his 90s. Ben lived a wonderful blessed life. He travelled the world with Dorothy and returned home with stories and objects which he delighted in sharing. He always loved a party; nothing gave him more joy than to dance at his grandchildrens weddings. Bens recent pleasure was the arrival of his six great-grandchildren. He was a man whose mind was filled with endless curiosity; always forward-looking even until the last days of his life. His passing leaves a huge void in our lives but he will always be remembered with love. Ben was a committed Jew, a lifelong Zionist, and a supporter of the Hebrew University and Ben Gurion University in Israel. He was active in many organizations in the Winnipeg Jewish community. He was a founder of the Jewish Child and Family Service, the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba and was a past president of the Rosh Pina Synagogue. We would like to thank all the wonderful people who helped to make his last years more comfortable, Esther Stulwark, Lynn Fineman, his caregivers, from Medox, his new friends and staff at the Portsmouth and special friend Sarah Tennenbaum. Funeral services were held at Etz Chayim Synagogue on January 22. Pallbearers were his grandchildren and nephews, Jordan Farber and Neil Baker. If so desired, donations can be made in his memory to the Dorothy and Ben Shuckett Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or the charity of your choice.
