MELVILLE RUSSELL MILLER
Date of Passing: Jan 21, 2004
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMELVILLE RUSSELL MILLER It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father and grandfather Russ Miller, 79, on January 21, 2004. Russ is survived by his loving wife Vi; his daughters, Patti (husband Larry Marlatt), Lynn (husband Lanny Floyde) son Mel (wife Mary-Jeanne) and grandchildren, Ryan, Adam, Quinn and McKenzie. Russ is also survived by his sister Maxine (husband Donovan Pinker) and numerous nieces and nephews. Sadly, Russ was predeceased by his brother Bill. Russ had a full life and left with no regrets. His life reads like a good novel. Russ and a small band of friends from the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders liberated France, Holland and Belgium bringing freedom to the civilized world and hastening the end of the Second World War. Then, like most returning war heroes he married the girl of his dreams, Violet Louise Deamel from Manitou, and they lived happily ever after! Other lifetime accomplishments included a wonderfully happy 52 year marriage to Vi, three children, and a 32-year career with the Manitoba Telephone System. Above all, Russ was genuinely proud of his almost 70-year commitment to the Camerons. Russ joined the Cadets in 1936, fought overseas from 1943-1945, attained the rank of Regimental Sergeant Major with the Militia and was later commissioned Captain and made Commanding Officer of the Cadet Corps. In retirement, Russ was a key member of the Cameron Advisory Board and the Cameron Association, he started its newsletter the "Oatmeal Rag." He worked tirelessly to promote regimental reunions, the curling league and golf tournaments. Dubbed "Mr. Cameron" Russ was awarded the St. Andrews Societys "Lord Strathcona Award" in 2001. He was a leader and role model. Russ gave a very large piece of his heart and soul to the Camerons! In lieu of flowers, our family suggests making a donation to the Riverview Health Centre, No. 3 East Ward, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg MB R3L 2P4 (a special thanks to Barb for her care), or a charity of your choice. According to Russ final wishes, he was cremated and a private memorial service held for immediate family at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. Russ wished to invite his family and friends to attend an informal celebration of his life (have a free lunch and drink on Russ- just like him eh?) at the St. James Legion on Monday, January 26, at 12:30 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
