KENNETH S. HUGHES In his 95th year and with family at his side, Kenneth Samuel Hughes passed away on January 16, 2004. Predeceased by his wife Eva and siblings, Kathleen, Ray, Jack and Glen (Normandy 1944). Ken was the last of a generation. As a young man, Ken left the family farm in Grandview, MB at the start of the depression to forge a 40 year career in banking with the CIBC. While posted in Elgin, MB, he caught the eye of Eva Arde and formed with her a sixty year partnership in marriage and bridge. Sense of justice and duty saw him leave a young family at home to enlist with the 12th Manitoba Dragoons and spend four years fighting in Europe during the Second World War. After the end of the war, family and work became his focus. Upon retiring, Ken and Eva spent summers at Clear Lake, MB, and their winters in Arizona and in later years, Brandon. Children, Kathleen Hughes of Winnipeg and Pat Wheatley (Ron Thul) of Moose Jaw; grandchildren, Paul, Tim and Scott Harland, Kent, Kristin and Keira Wheatley, their spouses and partners, and seven great-grandchildren are left to cherish his memory. Dad, or Bumpa to his grandchildren, seldom said no to an opportunity to spend time with his offspring. He passed on his great competitive zeal in all games played, the ability to laugh at oneself, his love of literature, and the importance of honesty and respect for all people. Bumpa had a keen wit, a great sense of fun, and was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He was greatly loved and, in his modest way, cast a lasting influence on those who had the good fortune of knowing him. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service at a later date in Brandon. Arrangements are in care of Brockie Donovan, Brandon, 727-0694.
