ANNIE "MAY" AIKENS
Date of Passing: Jan 22, 2004
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANNIE "MAY" AIKENS Peacefully, on January 22, 2004, May Aikens, formerly of Lavenham, MB, passed away at Deer Lodge Centre. May was born in Manitoba but traveled between Timmins, ON, and Lavenham/Rossendale most of her youth. In 1938 she arrived back in Manitoba where she met and married her devoted husband Lloyd. They were married for 52 years until his death separated them in 1994. Together they farmed in the Lavenham area and raised two children, Irvin and Vera. She was also predeceased by her daughter of 13 days, Georgina May, as well as another daughter who didnt live long enough to have a given name. In 1952 the family moved to Winnipeg until their retirement in 1980, when they returned to their home in Lavenham. May had a joy for life, and an even greater joy for giving. Throughout her life her children never had to question where she would be if they needed her, she was always right there. She was always the first to volunteer for anything and even with her arthritic knees, never had to be asked twice to do anything to help anyone. Her zest and spirit will live on in the minds of those who knew her. She leaves to cherish her memory daughter Vera-Lynne; son Irvin "Red" (Maureen) grandson Curtis (Lynette) and great-grandchildren, Christopher and Chelsea; sisters-in-law, Catherine (Kay) Whalen, Elizabeth (Lizzie) Whalen, Agnes (Nan) Aikens, Agnes Aikens, Jean Patterson; and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. She also leaves her best friend of 65 years, Bertha Henry, now of London, ON. She was also predeceased by brothers, Irvin, Sid and Simon; and sisters, Alice and Mary. A service of remembrance will be held at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave. (Aubrey Street entrance) on Monday at 7:30 p.m., and funeral services will be held in Lavenham Community Church on Tuesday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m. with interment in Rosendale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Morley Aikens, Harley Henry, Larry Henry, Wayne Whalen, Rodney Culbert and Murray Perkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Stirling and Eddie Woodward. The family of May wishes to thank the staff members of 3 East Deer Lodge Centre for their superb, unending care of both Mom and her family. In lieu of flowers, should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102 - 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6, or to a charity of their choice.
