CORRECTION: in Pallbearers name KARL FRANK Peacefully on Saturday, January 24, 2004, Karl Frank passed away at Holy Family Nursing Home. He will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, Elisabeth; son Eric; sisters, Lydia and Anne (Tober). Karl was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Gustav, Emilie, Ella, Emma and Amalia. Karl was born in Ukraine shortly before the outbreak of the Russian Revolution in 1917. He was forced to live and work under Communism, and his father was taken away from the family and sent to Siberia when Karl was 16, never to be seen again. Karl served as a Russian soldier in the Second World War until 1944, when he relocated to Hamburg, Germany and lived there until 1949 when he immigrated to Winnipeg with a suitcase in his hand and $2 in his pocket. Karl met his lovely wife-to-be, Elisabeth, while taking English classes at Kelvin High School. His first jobs in Winnipeg were at Adolphes Taxi, Greensteel, Bristol Aerospace, and Dominion Bridge. Karl bought the Green Orchard Cafe on Kate Street at Notre Dame Avenue in 1953, the year Eric was born. He also worked as a subcontractor during the housing boom in Garden City in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and was proud of having built the first split level home in Garden City on Primrose Crescent in 1958. Karl and Elisabeth then bought a bowling alley and taxi service in Beausejour in 1961, and built a soft ice cream stand there in 1962. Karl was a tireless worker and an exceptional provider for his family, and had several other jobs in addition to running the bowling alley and ice cream stand including: taxi driver (12 years), school bus driver (21 years) and bailiff (15 years). Karl and Elisabeth sold their businesses, house and cottage and returned to the North End of Winnipeg in 1987. He had his first stroke in 1997 and resided at Holy Family Nursing Home for the past six years. Even though Karl was always busy, he always lent a hand to help others whenever possible. His sharp sense of humour made others feel happy and comfortable around him. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. The family would like to thank the Holy Family Nursing Home staff on the 5th floor for their exceptional care. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 29, at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with Pastor Don Engel officiating. Interment will follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Ed Tober, Willi Trautmann, Herbert Tober, John Hamrak, Grant Jobst and Robert Brumwell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Karls memory to the Holy Family Nursing Home, 165 Aberdeen Ave., Winnipeg, R2W 1T9. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
