FERNIE SIMON Peacefully on February 2, 2004, at the Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern, MB, Fernie (Fernand Emmanuel Ernest) Simon, aged 91 years of Ashern, MB. Fernie was born on the family homestead at Dog Lake District on November 19, 1912. He was raised there with his two brothers, Joseph and Victor and one sister Marie (Schwitek). He attended the Dog Lake School. Fernie farmed with his father Constance and eventually took over the farm and raised a family of his own. He married Lorna Miller on June 28, 1947 and had three children, Valerie, Edith and Ivan. After many years of hard work on the farm, Fernie and Lorna retired to Ashern where they enjoyed many years of retired life; travelling to visit friends and relatives, settling into their new home and taking up new hobbies. They also enjoyed many years of playing cards with friends, both cribbage and bridge. For several years, Fernie tried his hand in the art of wine making and had a particular talent for brewing a potent mix. He took up the game of golf with a vengeance at the age of 65 and became very proficient at it over the next 25 years of his life. The highlight in his golf career was when he shot a hole-in-one on the fifth hole of the Ashern Golf Course. This event, however, often ranked second to any time Fernie was able to win a quarter from his valued golf partners for being the closest to the hole. Fernie was predeceased by his mother Anne-Marie in 1938, his father Constance in 1964 and his wife Lorna in 2000; brother Victor passed on in 1970, Joseph in 1988 and sister Marie in 2001. He leaves three children, Valerie Lind (Garry), grandson David and his wife Carol, great-grandson Tucker and granddaughter Leanne (Eyvi Smith) Edith Peterson (Ken), granddaughter Kara and grandson Kris; Ivan (Karen), grandsons Todd and Greg and granddaughter Tracy. Friends and relatives may pay their respects between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at the Arnason Funeral Home in Ashern, MB. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2004, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church with Fr. Guy Lavallee officiating. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the Church. Service will conclude at the Church with cremation to follow. An interment will be held at a later date at the Lakeside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his seven grandchildren. In Fernies memory, donations may be made to the Lakeshore General Hospital c/o Julie Bergner, Box 791, Ashern, MB R0C 0E0 "to be used in the Palliative Care Unit".
