DANIEL TORBIAK, P,Eng. Peacefully, and with quiet grace and dignity, after a brief illness, on February 2, 2004, an amazing family man and role model was called to be with the Lord. Dan was born in Winnipeg, April 8, 1936 to Peter and Albina (nee Perchalski) and grew up in Poplarfield, MB. He maintained close ties with many friends and relatives from the area all his life. In 1959 he graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked with Imperial Oil, IBM, the Manitoba and Federal governments, but his first love was independent business. He operated a hotel in partnership with his mother, sister and brother then a restaurant as a family enterprise in the 1970s. These experiences solidified and strengthened his family. Though he retired in 1994, he was often called upon to return for consulting work for the government until the time of his illness. Dan was an active parishioner of St. Basils Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1966 to 1971, St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1971 to 1976, and again at St. Basils, 1976 to present. He was an avid cyclist and outdoorsman, and a regular member of the YMCA. He was always devoted to his family and friends, all of whom knew him as an energetic man of integrity, high standards, honesty and intelligence. Dans father predeceased him in 1965 and his mother in 1993 . He is survived by Helen (nee Glitnak), his beloved wife of 47 years; sons, Dan Jr. (Dawn) in Winnipeg, Raymond in Hamilton, and Carl (Lee Ann) in Edmonton; nine wonderful grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth (Con) Genik, Jennie Bailley; brothers, Peter (Dodie) and Steve Torbiak; many nieces and nephews; and by a large circle of friends and relatives whose support and kindness have been a Godsend in this most difficult of times. Special mention must be given of the outstanding care and compassion shown by Dr. Russell Albak and his assistant Rose Ann. We also wish to thank Drs., J. Robinson, G. Pierse, R. Wong, C. Olweny, the Oncology Clinic at St. Boniface Hospital, the fabulous nurses of 5B at St. Boniface Hospital and the exceptional staff at the Grace Hospice. Their professionalism and kindness will not be forgotten. Prayers and eulogies will be held at St. Basils Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St. on Wednesday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. on Thursday, February 5 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Frs., Boris Kyba C.Ss.R. and Isidore Dziadyk O.S.B.M. officiating, with interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery. Pallbearers will be sons, Daniel, Raymond and Carl Torbiak; brother Steve Torbiak; nephew Terry Bailley; and grandson Andrew Torbiak. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society may be made in Dans memory. We know there is a quiet forest trail, a sunny autumn day, a mug of coffee, and maybe an old black dog waiting for him. Gods mind is not for us to know. He summons us and we must go. Your smile, your voice, the memories Of times we shared, well treasure these And feel your touch and see your face In every golden sunsets grace. VICHNAYA PAMYAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193
