DOROTHY MARIE SLAUGHTER Dorothy Slaughter, beloved sister of Audrey, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at Deer Lodge Hospital where she has resided for the past year. She fought a good fight - the battle is over. Dorothy was predeceased by her father and mother, John and Pearl Slaughter. She is survived by her sister Audrey (Howard), their children, Lenore (Alan) and Jack (Doreen) also her cousin Meryl (Norm) who has been a source of strength to her over the past years. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Winnipeg, USA and Rankin Inlet. Dorothy had established a bond with her special friend Maureen Newman, whom she fondly referred to as her "adopted" daughter. Dorothy was born in Winnipeg on August 16, 1920 and received her early education in Greenway, General Wolfe and Daniel MacIntyre schools. In 1941, Dorothy taught a class of 60 students in a one room classroom in Grades 1 through 6 in Victoria Beach. In the following two years, she taught in Kenville and Minitonas. She returned to Winnipeg in 1944 and worked as a substitute teacher. In 1950, she organized the first kindergarten at Weston School in Winnipeg and stayed there for 11 years. Fond of travel, in 1961, Dorothy went to D.N.D. School at Soest, Germany for two years; and upon returning to Winnipeg, she taught kindergarten at Gladstone School for the next three years. In the spring and summer of 1966, Dorothy went to the University of Minnesota to prepare herself for the teaching of four year old children. She returned to Weston School where she had started the Kindergarten 16 years earlier and taught nursery school until 1970. In 1970-71 Dorothy took a sabbatical leave to complete a degree at the University of Manitoba, and during the spring and summer of 1971, she worked for the Provincial Government as a supervisor-consultant for the pre-school programs among the native children in Manitoba. In September 1971, Dorothy became principal of Fort Rouge School in Winnipeg, a position which she held until her retirement. During her years as a teacher and a principal, Dorothy was a member of many boards and committees relative to her work life. In retirement, Dorothy spent her summers at her cottage in Victoria Beach. This meant so much to her as she lived in an apartment in the city and considered Victoria Beach her summer home. It was here that she was able to continue her close relationship with her lifelong friends - the Ateah family. In this regard, she often spoke of the faithful contact of one of her "fellow" teachers, Eva Bonkowski of Riverton, MB. Dorothy has been a lifelong member of Broadway-First Baptist Church, Winnipeg, a member of the Teachers Association, the Independent Order of Forresters, the Rebekahs - Queen Esther Lodge. Many thanks to the staff of Deer Lodge Hospital, 4th floor West, for the excellent care and support to Dorothy over the past year. At Dorothys request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held at Broadway-First Baptist Church, 796 Honeyman Ave. on Saturday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Rupert officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Dorothys memory, to Broadway-First Baptist Church or a charity of your choice. THOMSON Funeral Chapels - 669 Broadway - 783-7211
