STANLEY SOPKO It is with deep regret that we announce the death of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Stanley Sopko (Gigi) on Thursday, January 29, 2004, at Selkirk General District Hospital, at the age of 95 years. Remaining to cherish his memory are his children, Larry (Diana) and Barbara (Bob Butler) grandchildren, Sherri (James), Wayne, Alanna, Judi (Mike), David (Pam) and Ken (Kaz) great-grandchildren, Joshua, Markus, Matthew (Sherri), Shae, Shaun (Judi), Jordan, Sydney (David) and Malcolm (Ken) sisters, Helen, Jean and Ollie; and brothers, Bill and John. Stanley was predeceased by his wife Eva (Samagalski) on April 6, 1982; his parents; sisters, Anne, Mary, Rose and Kaye; and brother Michael. Stanley was born in 1908 on his parents farm in Libau, MB. He was the eldest son of 11 children. Stanley and Eva were married in 1934 and lived a full and happy life. He built their home in 1948 and continued doing carpentry work, mostly heavy construction. Sites that he worked on included the Seven Sisters Dam, Northern Schools, East Selkirk Generating Station, St. Clements Municipal Office, Polo Park Mall, restoration of Lower Fort Garry (including the York boats that have been distributed nation wide) as well as numerous homes and barns. Stanley served as trustee on the Libau School Board and as a board member of the Manitoba Farmers Union. He helped organize the Libau Community Club and was a member of the St. Clements Planning Commission. Stanley also farmed and raised hogs that were shipped overseas for the army during the depression. In his spare time, Stanley maintained his farm and farmhouse. He enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting, curling and playing cards with his neighbours. Stanley and Eva loved traveling throughout Manitoba. After Evas passing, Stanley enjoyed traveling with his brother-in-law John and niece Joan. In his senior years, he enjoyed the East Selkirk Seniors Club. One of Stanleys greatest joys was spending time with his children and grandchildren, teaching and instilling his values - especially integrity, honesty and unconditional love. A private family interment will take place at a later date. As an expression of sympathy, donations in Stanleys memory may be made to a charity of ones choice. "Gigi, we love you and will miss you."
