STEPHEN SENYK Husband, father and well-known sax and clarinet player, Stephen Senyk, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2004 at Seven Oaks Hospital, surrounded by his family. He leaves to mourn, Ann, his wife of 59 years; eight children, Jack (Joanne), Donna, Ken, Gloria (Terry), George, Valerie (Rob), Warren (Laurie) and Deborah; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his brother George (Onie). Steve was born January 1, 1915 and raised in Winnipegs North End. He became a professional musician at the age of 13 and became a permanent fixture on the Winnipeg Music Scene until his first stroke in 1996. He was a member of the Winnipeg Musicians Union Local #190 and played locally with the likes of Monte Levine Orchestra, Jimmy King, Jack Crosby and the Ron Paley Orchestra. He also had a long-standing gig with the Shrine Circus playing for entertainers such as Chuck Connors and Omar Sharif. He received national acclaim for his musical talents and was recognized in the prestigious Down Beat magazine. He shared his love for music with family and friends and was always eager to perform impromptu concerts at any social gathering. Though not a degreed educator he taught music in the Winnipeg School Division for a period of 15 years. While music was his passion, his greatest love was his wife Ann, who dedicated herself after his stroke to making sure he was able to remain in his home until his illness no longer made this possible. A service in honor of his memory will be held on Tuesday, February 17 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stephens memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
