FORTUNE RIPERT Peacefully on February 17, 2004 at the age of 95 years. He was the last remaining member of his family. Fortune was predeceased by his wife Andree Genevieve on March 18, 2002 after 60 years of marriage. He leaves to mourn, daughters, Rosamond De Smet (Henri) and Yvette Spence (Gordon) one son Raymond (Linda) grandchildren, Daniel De Smet (Kristin), Jocelyne McKie (Colin), Natalie Armstrong (Ken) and Graham Spence, as well as many nephews and nieces in Canada and the United States. Mr. Ripert was born December 25, 1908 to Fortune and Marie-Therese Ripert (nee Audigier) in Laugerie, Algeria. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1911. They settled in Wauchope, SK. During his youth, Fortune spent three years in Pennsylvania where he learned English. After leaving the farm, he joined the Canadian Army in 1940. During this time, he married Andree in 1941 in Hamilton, ON. When Fortune was discharged from the Army in 1943, they returned to Winnipeg and purchased the farm at Lot 11, McPhillips Street, residing there until 1960 at which time, they moved to Fort Garry. Dads working career was mostly spent with the Board Grain Commissioners, a job that appealed to the farmer at heart. While proud of his French heritage, he was a devoted Canadian. Even in his later years, he enjoyed keeping up with current events. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by all of his siblings, Maria Berthon, Seraphine Cardamone, Marthe Mancheff, Angele Miller, Emilienne Dangstorp and a brother Marcel in infancy. Many thanks to all the staff at Thorvaldsons for the kindness shown to Dad. Funeral service will be held on Friday, February 20 at 10:00 a.m. at the Garry Memorial Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. with visitation one half hour prior to service. Interment will follow in Waverley Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301 - 352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 2H8.
