VALERIE MARY ANNA HAWKINS (nee STRECKER) On Saturday, February 21, 2004, at her residence, Valerie Hawkins of Portage la Prairie, widow of the late Charles Joseph Hawkins, passed away peacefully with family at her side. Fr. Michael Wollbaum officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Valerie was born on February 25, 1930, daughter of Edward and Mary Strecker in Beausejour. She was raised in Beausejour, MacDonald and Portage la Prairie, graduating from PCI. Predeceased by her parents, husband CJ Hawkins and cousin/brother Joe Watson, she leaves to mourn her passing her soul mate Jerry Murray; her children, Chuck (Loretta) Hawkins, Robert (Iris) Hawkins, Ronald (Pat) Hawkins, Lorraine Hawkins (Lawrence Petrowsky), Noreen (Lennox) Glasgow; her stepchildren, Kelly Murray, Lisa (Gord) Gherasim, Tara Murray (Darryl Copeland) 16 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother Ed (Carol) Strecker; her sisters, Florence (Ernie) Bradshaw, Lorraine Strecker-Miller; and several nieces and nephews. Mom had many different roles in life. She started out working as a teacher, then onto being an x-ray technician and joining the Air Force. She had spent much time travelling while in the Air Force, mostly in Ontario and Germany, returning to Portage la Prairie in 1966 to be with and continue raising her family. In 1972, Mom started working at the Portage District General Hospital doing various jobs and eventually took the position of the night shift receptionist/admitting clerk, which she held for 20 years. After retiring in 1994, she volunteered at the hospital with the POP program and with the RCMP administrative department and C.O.P. Mom greatly enjoyed spending time with family, friends and travelling - especially out west to Alberta. Her greatest joy came from travelling unknown roads and this is the last road to travel. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • She was a lady of patience & grace who liked going to church when not at the hospital, or roaming the neighborhoods with C.O.P. Like a mother bird to her offspring she was always there as a stern parent & wife no matter what life threw. She will always be remembered as a devoted neighbour, mother, grandmother & friend. - Posted by: Benji M.D. Hawkins Rustulka (grandson - son of Chuck ( rip) Debi Rustulka ) on: Jan 06, 2015
