The family moved to Flin Flon in 1941. After completing her education to the end of grade 12, Doris received her nurses training at the Winnipeg General Hospital. She met her husband while at home on sick leave, having contracted polio at the King George Hospital. Doris was interested in all sports. She took part in track and field and was one of the stars on the high school girls basketball team. After a brief encounter with nursing, Doris decided to stay home and care for her family. She spent many happy hours at the curling rinks and bowling alleys. She curled with the West Kildonan ladies and also with the Seven Oaks teachers. She bowled with a mixed club at Mosienko lanes for many years and also briefly with the Winnipeg teachers. She also enjoyed playing bridge. At Doriss request a celebration of her life was held at her home and in her presence, surrounded by members of the family. She enjoyed their company and even took part in the celebration.
