MARY SARANCHUK (BOHONOS) With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Mary Saranchuk (Bohonos), nee Cyhanewich, on February 23, 2004, at Victoria General Hospital, in the presence of her family. Also left to mourn her passing are great-grandchildren, Julia Zaluski, Ryan and Amy Wowchuk, and Matthew Saranchuk; sisters-in-law, Mary Chanwick (daughters, Joan and Mary-Liz), Helen and Zena Bohonos; brothers-in-law, Nestor (Helena) and John (Roslyn) Bohonos and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, Theodore and Pearl Cyhanewich; her brother, Michael Chanwick; her first husband, William J. Bohonos, his parents and siblings, Helen, Myroslaw, Walter Bohonos and Olga Saranchuk (her husband Stephens first wife) and Stephens parents and siblings. Mary was born on January 4, 1920 in Winnipeg, where she received her education. As a gifted musician, she studied with the noted pianist, John Melnyk. She was proud of her Ukrainian heritage and in her youth performed on stage at numerous cultural events as a dancer, vocalist and pianist. She will be remembered as an accomplished player and teacher of the piano and the bandura, the multi-stringed national instrument of Ukraine. Embroidering, gardening and baking were some of her favourite pastimes. In 1942, she married William Bohonos and enjoyed her role as wife and mother. Later, she assisted William in his optometric practice in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba until his death in 1970. She married Stephen Saranchuk in 1973, and over the span of 30 years they enjoyed a special relationship with common family ties stemming from the fact that their deceased first spouses were siblings. Mary was an extremely active member of the community, having been involved in numerous charitable activities in support of the arts, cultural organizations, medical support groups and horticultural events. She was a lifelong member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada and a founding member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. She was also a member of the Ukrainian Womens Association of Canada, St. Andrews College and the Ukrainian Museum of Canada (Manitoba and Saskatchewan). Mary was an extremely talented yet humble person whose loving, gracious and optimistic personality was reflected in her consideration for all others - family, friends and strangers. To have known her, enjoyed her company and shared her enthusiasm for life was both an honour and a privilege. Prayers will be sung Friday, February 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main St. Funeral service will take place Saturday, February 28 at 10:00 a.m. also at the cathedral with Very Rev. H. Lakusta officiating. Interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, a donation may be made in Marys memory to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Inc., Manitoba Lung Association or a charity of ones choice.
