FREDERICK LLOYD GILES JUNE 17, 1917 - FEBRUARY 20, 2004 Peacefully, and surrounded by his family, Fred passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at the age of 86 years. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Myrtle of 62 years of marriage; six children, Noreen Ayotte (John), Mavis Lowenberger, Jackie Farmer (Bob), Laurie Giles (Fran), Fred Giles (Sandy) and Rhonda Kibsey (Barry) 15 grandchildren, Michael (Tina), Monique (Bill), Amanda, Kristin (Graeme), Kevin, Patrick, Karen (Dave), Carly, Lanie, Warren, Tara, Kira, Brendan, Adrian and Alexandria; and five great-grandchildren, Holly, Blair, Danielle, Adam and Zachary. Fred will also be remembered by good friend, Bob Lowenberger. Fred is also survived by his sister Winnifred Pettipas; brother Bill and numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was born in Manigotogan, MB to George and Lillian Giles on June 17, 1917. He was predeceased by his parents; brother Gordon and sisters, Muriel, Lillian and Dorothy and his beloved Grandpa and Grandma Fisher. After moving to Winnipeg as a young boy, he remained true to his northern roots and held a life-long interest in prospecting and hunting. He resided in St. Vital, where he completed his education, met his wife and raised his family. After discharge from the Army, Fred worked for Air Canada for 43 years as a machinist and was recognized for his many innovative and cost-saving inventions. He was considered a jack-of-all-trades and along with Myrt, built a cherished summer home at Lundar Beach. The cottage continues to be a great source of enjoyment to the family. Fred was very active in the sporting community and took pride in being conversant in all sports. Hockey was his great love, having played in his younger years and later on spent many hours volunteering at Glenwood Community Club. When he wasnt coaching, you could find him sharpening skates in the basement of the old clubhouse. He served as President of the club for one year and was involved in the discussions to build the covered rink. Fred spent countless enjoyable hours watching his kids and grandchildren play (right Skippy!). In his retirement years, Fred and Myrt enjoyed travelling to different casinos in Nevada. In their later years, they liked to go to a Sunday buffet before heading off to a local casino. A private family memorial service will take place at a later date. Our family would like to thank all the staff at the Pembina Place Mennonite Personal Care Home. Special thanks is extended to Robert and Kathleen for their dedication and care during the last days of his life.
