VERNIE VICTOR HASSETT Passed away peacefully in his sleep in Burlington, ON, on Monday, February 23, 2004. He was 91. He is mourned by his beloved wife, Enid Ester Hassett, and his only child, Brian Ross Hassett. He will be sadly missed by his step-daughter Susan LeSauvage of Thunder Bay, her husband Gerry, and the two grandchildren, Michael and Christopher; his sister-in-law Marjorie MacAuley of Brandon; his sister-in-law Kay Hassett of Drumheller, AB; as well as his nieces, Sylvia Shaw of Vancouver, Marg Code of Calgary, Gwen Arney of Detroit, and Myrtle Empey of Kenora; and his nephew Aubrey Hassett of Vancouver; and all of their spouses and children. Born in Dominion City, MB, to William Blenard Hassett and Harris Elizabeth Green, there he began a 48-year working relationship with the Bank of Montreal in 1929. He worked in several different branches, including Regina, Calgary, Fort William, and Winnipeg, where he retired as an Account Manager from the Main Branch at Portage and Main in 1976. He joined the Manitoba Active Militia in 1939, and the Canadian Army in 1942 as a member of The Royal Winnipeg Rifles. Landing in Italy in 1943, he joined The Irish Regiment of Canada. In 1951, he met Enid Ester Bennett (Olver) of Brandon, and they were married there in 1956. In 1961 his only child, Brian, was born, and the family settled in River Heights in 1965 for the next quarter-century. He participated in and supported sports throughout his active years, and will be remembered for his kindness, fairness, playfulness, sense of humour and honour. He loved hockey, gardening and breakfast. He loved following the news, doing everything for himself, and puttering at his "Wagon Wheels" cottage in Gimli. He loved his family, and we loved him. A celebration of Verns life will be held at the family home in Oakville on the evening of Saturday, March 6.
