MICHAEL STEPHEN LITWIN Michael Stephen Litwin died February 26, 2004 after a long and full life, surrounded by his loving and supportive family. Michael was born September 2, 1916, in Transcona, MB to Stephen and Helen Litwin. He started his working life with the CNR in 1934 and joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942, serving on both the East and West coasts until 1945. Having married in 1943, he returned to the CNR in Transcona with Shirley and their two young sons, Michael and Leslie. In 1947 the family moved west to Victoria where Michael began working as a supervisor for CIL on James Island. He travelled back and forth on the ferry every day, but began building houses during his spare time, in evenings and on weekends. He eventually started his own construction business in 1958 and continued his building and developing career until the mid 1990s. During this time he was also a keen participant in the Sidney Kinsmen, a long-standing member and president of the Victoria Home Builders Association, a member of the Canadian Club and the Victoria Golf Club. A generous and kind-hearted man, Michael devoted his life to the happiness and well-being of his family, particularly his cherished wife, Shirley, who shared more than 60 wonderful years with him. He also delighted in the lives of his children and grandchildren, taking great pride in their accomplishments, always encouraging and supporting their efforts, and being enthusiastically involved in all facets of their lives. Michael is survived by his wife Shirley; son Michael Litwin (Grania) daughter Susan Garvey (John) daughter Lisa Nicholson (Rick) sister Eleanor Hess (Lyle) brother-in-law Les Beeston; and cousin Eva Skrynyk, of Winnipeg; as well as grandchildren, Val and Mark Litwin, Lauren and Kevin Garvey, and Leslie and Lance Litwin. He was predeceased by his son Leslie, in 2002. A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Mildenberger and Dr. Lapp, as well as all the kind and compassionate nurses in the Coronary Care Unit of Royal Jubilee Hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Victoria Hospice Society. Following a private family service, a reception and celebration of Michaels life will be held at the Victoria Golf Club on Thursday, March 4, at 2:30 p.m. Arrangements are being made by McCall Bros.
