MAX BERINSTEIN Max Berinstein, beloved devoted husband of the late Evelyn Berinstein, father of Roxy Freedman (Martin), Edward (Mariette) Berinstein, Neil (Corinne) Berinstein; and loving grandfather of Jacqueline, Karyn, Lisa, Stephanie, Nicol, Rachel, Jeffrey, Elliot, Andrew, Zachary; and very proud great-grandfather of Ethan and Talia, passed away suddenly in his home on February 27, 2004. He was predeceased by his sister Faye and his parents, Joshua and Sarah. He will be very sadly missed by his entire family. Max was born in Winnipeg in 1918. He grew up in the south end of the city and followed in his fathers footsteps, graduating from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba in 1939. He married the love of his life, Evelyn Travis, in 1941. Shortly thereafter he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and served as a pharmacist on ships that conveyed soldiers across the Atlantic. Upon returning to Winnipeg he worked together with his father to establish a number of pharmacies throughout Winnipeg, including the Manitoba Drug Store at 587 Selkirk Ave., where he spent most of his professional career. He was deeply devoted to his wife of 62 years. He was equally devoted to his children and worked hard throughout his life to support and provide them with the opportunities that would influence their lives. He encouraged education and academic achievement and was very proud to have four generations of his family graduate from the University of Manitoba. He loved his summers at Winnipeg Beach where he enjoyed fishing, golfing and barbequing. He was a voracious reader, an enthusiastic swimmer and an avid bridge player. Max had a genuine interest in the lives of all of his children and grandchildren. He kept a regular dialogue with all of us. He could be counted on for his good advice and wisdom. In the final years of his life he selflessly and with loving patience cared for his dear wife Evelyn until her death a mere seven weeks ago. They will both be deeply missed. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 561 Wellington Cres., Winnipeg. Contributions may be made to the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue or any other charity of your choice.
