He was predeceased by his beloved wife Annie (December 4, 1989) his sister Sophie Shumanski (September 13, 2003) and his parents, Dan and Katherine of The Pas. His memory will be deeply cherished by his family of Edward (Alice) of Gladstone, MB; grandchildren, Brenda of Winnipeg, and Grant of Singapore; Florence (Allan) of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Ryan (friend Brandi) and Michelle both of Winnipeg, Katie and friend Don of Winnipeg, Anthony and friend Sara of Winnipeg. He is also survived by three sisters, Stella Carlash of Toronto, Jean Jones of Ottawa and Helen Addison of Toronto as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Mike was born in Winnipeg on August 9, 1913. He grew up in Weiden, MB on pioneer land or homestead, broken and cleared by axe and oxen. Dad left school at a very young age and quickly pursued his passion for farming. Dad also dedicated time to custom work land clearing (breaking), custom threshing, cutting firewood, cutting lumber (sawmill), and small welding jobs. He was never too busy to stop what he was doing and offer a helping hand to whoever was in need at that moment. However, there was never any work that was so important that it had to be done on a Sunday. Dad also enjoyed hunting, carpentry, card playing, as well as social and community functions. Retirement took him to Dauphin where he became a master of gardening. Co-op coffee gatherings and new friends quickly became his pleasurable pastimes. At every opportunity he cherished and loved to celebrate gatherings of family and friends. For as long as he was able, attending Sunday Mass was very important to Dad. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the Dauphin Personal Care Home staff, medical staff and support staff for the devoted care and compassion given to dad during his stay. You were a great support to him and to us. Prayers will be offered on Wednesday, March 3 at 6:00 p.m. from the Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Chapel, 502 main St. South in Dauphin. Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 4 at 10:00 a.m. at the Dauphin Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection, 801 Jackson St. Msgr.
