Peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, Ferris Metcalfe, a long time resident of Portage la Prairie, beloved brother of Della Metcalfe, passed away at the age of 91 years. Ferris was born in rural Portage la Prairie on May 17, 1912, son of Frank and Elizabeth Metcalfe. He was educated at Central School, Portage Collegiate Institute, Winnipeg Normal School and University of Manitoba where Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees were obtained. A fine scholar, a dedicated teacher and an able administrator, Mr. Metcalfe taught for three years at rural centers, four and one half years in Central School and 29 and one half years in the Portage Collegiate Institute. Much of his time in the Portage Collegiate was an senior History teacher and from 1956 to 1969 as the schools Vice-Principal. With the opening of the new open area Yellowquill School, Mr. Metcalfe was appointed its first principal, a position that he held until his retirement on June 30, 1975. For 43 years, he devoted his life to the education of the youth of this community. Sincerity and honesty towards those whom he served characterized this devotion. Ferris is survived by two sisters, Della E. Metcalfe, with whom he shared the family home, E. Aileen (Roy) A. Hambleton and nephew Frank R. Hambleton, all of Winnipeg. In accordance with the wishes of Ferris, cremation will take place followed by a graveside family service at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie, MB on Friday, March 5 at 11:00 a.m. "I have run the race.
