HUGH JOHN CAMPBELL November 9, 1919 - March 3, 2004 Peacefully, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by his family, "Hughie" passed away on March 3, 2004 at 84 years of age. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Jo-Ann; his children, Rod (Gayle), Boyd (Josie) and Cindy; his grandchildren, Patrick (Teresa), Deryk, Heather, Reghan (Mark), Colin (Jennifer), Jeremy and Tara; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Logan and Mackenzie; brother Ray (Marie) sister Lina; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hugh grew up in the Teulon area playing hockey, and working at various jobs so he could keep playing hockey. At the age of 21, he went off to fight for his country overseas from 1940 to 1946. When he got back to Canada, along with his new bride Jo-Ann, he returned to Teulon where one of his proudest accomplishments was to coach Teulon to two consecutive Junior B Provincial Hockey Championships, while working different jobs in the area. In 1956, Hugh began a career with Canada Customs as a Border Officer and moved his family to Gretna. For the next 28 years, Hugh continued his passion for sports and kids. In the Gretna area, he introduced organized hockey and baseball where none existed before. Thanks to Hugh, many of the area kids benefited from organized sports. He spearheaded a drive to build new sport facilities, including a curling rink and a general sports centre. He passed on his passion for sports by coaching hockey and baseball to a generation of kids, including his own. He retired from Canada Customs in 1984 and returned to Teulon. In retirement, his love of sports and kids continued as he coached a new generation of kids, including his grandson. Hugh will always be remembered by all his "kids" for passing on his love of sports and the part it played in growing up. He will be remembered by his friends and family for his love of gardening, his late blooming interest in golf, his time at the lake in Gimli, his love of family, and a sense of humour that continued until his last days. The family wishes to thank Dr. Graham, Dr. Brandes, and the staff at the Hunter Memorial Hospital in Teulon for taking such good care of Hugh over the years. They also wish to thank the CancerCare Drivers for the numerous trips to Winnipeg to get Hugh to his appointments. A service will be held on March 6 at the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel in Teulon at 1:00 p.m. Private family interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Teulon, in care of arrangements.
