Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDUNCAN LLOYD KIPPEN, M.D. 1919 - 2004 Duncan died peacefully at the age of 85 in the Kelowna General Hospital on February 19, 2004 with his loving wife Marga at his side. Born in Newdale, MB, the son of a rural doctor, Dunc was raised with Margaret, Wendell, Robert, Bruce, and Neil. After schooling in Newdale and Minnedosa, Duncan attended the University of Manitoba and graduated from Medicine in 1942. After interning at the Winnipeg General Hospital, he joined the R.C.A.M.C., serving from 1943 to 1946 in the N.W. European Campaign as an 18th field ambulance medical officer and returned to Military Hospital duty in England from 1944 to 1946. On returning to Winnipeg, he joined the Winnipeg Clinic where he practiced until his retirement in 1994. In 1948 he obtained a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Chicago under Drs. Joe Kirsner and Walter Palmer and brought the specialty of G.I. and endoscopy to the Winnipeg Clinic. For years he showed his skills teaching as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine. Always dedicated to the needs of his patients, Duncan also tried to improve the practice of medicine in Manitoba. He was one of the pioneers in the development of the Manitoba Medical Service, which became the model for the later development of Medicare in Manitoba. He was always active in medical politics, serving as President of the Manitoba Medical Association in 1967 and of the Canadian Medical Association in 1970. He would like to be remembered for his contributions to medical economics at both the provincial and federal level. Throughout his 48 years in practice, his outside interests included curling, hunting, gardening, golf, sailing his Y-flyer, and holidaying with the family at West Hawk Lake. For the last 10 years of retirement, Dunc and Marga loved their Kelowna home and lifestyle. Besides his loving wife Marga, remaining to mourn his passing are brother Dr. Neil Kippen and family in the United States; sons, Duncan (Shirley) and Dr. Robert (Maura) daughters, Stacey (Andy) and Heidi; grandchildren, James, Matthew, Meghan, Andrea, Colleen, Trevor, and Bradley; former wife Marge; and dear friends and colleagues. A celebration of his life was held in Kelowna on February 25. Following cremation, his ashes will be laid to rest in the family plot under the large pine in Newdale. A fund has been established to provide bursary aid to rural Manitoba students entering the faculty of Medicine. Should you wish to honour his memory, a contribution could be made to the Dr. Duncan Kippen Memorial Fund and sent to the Department of Private Funding, 179 Continuing Education Complex, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2 or call 204-474-9195. "Always remembered and sadly missed. All that lives must die, passing through nature to Eternity."
