Born in Teulon, MB on August 23, 1937, he was the son of the late David C. and Mary (Perich) Foster. Following his early education in Winnipeg public schools, he attended the Universities of Houston (BA), Manitoba (BEd) and North Dakota (MS, PhD). Prior to moving to Nova Scotia, Jim taught in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba and worked in the U of M Counselling Service. In 1971 he joined the Faculty of the Acadia University School of Education and, for many years served as the Director of the Counselling Centre. He retired from Acadia in July of 2003. Jim battled ill health for many years and was a great believer in the healing power of humour. He set an example for his students, encouraging them to apply humour in counselling. In one of his many professional papers, he stated that it could be argued there isnt much to joke about these days. "A catalogue of ills besets our times...Faced with these problems, how do we laugh? We laugh because we realize we have to, because humour of the best kind always holds a measure of hope. Sometimes that is not only what we need - it is all we have." Dedicated to many community and professional organizations, he coached minor hockey in Canning and served as president of the Canning and District Minor Hockey Association. He was a former president of Family and Childrens Services of Kings County. In 1985, he was instrumental in establishing the All Hearts Association, a voluntary self-help and educational group for post cardiac patients.
