MEL CRAVEN It is with great difficulty that we announce the passing of Mel Craven (z"l) on January 24, 2004. Mel is survived by his cherished wife Reva; loving children, Leah (Steven London) Mirit (Andrew Schneider) and Joelle; adoring grandchildren, Matthew, Ariel and Maya; mother-in-law Eva Szlachter; mother Sara Craven; sister Joyce Rykiss and numerous friends and relatives. Mel was gentle, generous, kind, trustworthy, creative, talented and ethical. He treated everyone with respect and compassion. Mel was a consummate professional who took tremendous pride in being an architect for 36 years. He was involved in either the design or project management of commercial and residential properties, personal care homes, educational, military and recreational facilities and developed an expertise in health care facilities throughout Manitoba and Ontario. Mel was an extremely dedicated member of the Jewish community. He served as President and Board member of the Herzlia synagogue; Chair and Board Member of Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate; Board Member of the Winnipeg Jewish Community Council; Chair, Board member and Mayor for the Shalom Square, Folklorama, and Board Member and Tu BShevat Telethon Chair of the Jewish National Fund. Professionally, Mel held many appointments and memberships, including President, Treasurer and Member of the Manitoba Association of Architects; Member of the Council of Education Facility Planners, International; Founding Member of the Canadian Hospital Engineering Society; Member of the American Society for Health Care Engineering of the American Hospital Association and longstanding appointment to the International Council Architects Registration Board. Mel was also President of the Kiwanis Club; Member of the Variety Club of Manitoba; Board Member with the Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg and volunteer and tour guide with Folklorama. Above all, family was paramount to Mel and he was the most beloved husband, father and zaidie. His family will always miss and cherish him.
