VIOLET IRENE (HYSLOP) HENDERSON (nee Porteous) On Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at Golden West Centennial Lodge, Irene Henderson, aged 82, passed away peacefully with courage and dignity, with family and friends by her side. She will be sadly missed by her children, Tom (Marlene), Jim (Susan), Linda (Gerd), Barbara, David and (Sharon and Coleen). She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Sherry (Jim), Jamie (Jen), Paul (Yuko), Amy (Joe), John, Jennifer (Paul), Leigha, Evan and 14 great-grandchildren. She will be missed by her brothers, Tom and Victor (Marion) Porteous; and sisters, Shirley Porteous and Donna (Jack) Klassen and will be sadly missed by all her many friends and relatives. Irene was born in Portage la Prairie, June 8, 1921 to Stanley and Violet Porteous. She moved to Winnipeg in 1935, where she attended Winnipeg Bible Institute. During this time she met Ebenezer Hyslop. They were married in Truro, NS in 1940. Irene returned to Winnipeg after her husband was stationed overseas. They raised five children together and after the youngest was old enough, she returned to work. Irene worked at Regency Coin and Stamp and also Eatons shoe department in Winnipeg and Vancouver. She later worked at Aberdeen Hotel and Keleckis. Irene started singing at a very early age at the United Church in Portage la Prairie. Irene has been singing publicly all her life. She trained with Professor Milo in Winnipeg and sang on the radio stations in the 1940s. Her singing career as a soloist consisted of choir, weddings, funerals and other special occasions. In 1980 Irene joined the Tods Todlers Seniors Choir and later joined the Winnipeg Singing Seniors in 1992. Her voice, her singing was a gift from God and she touched many hearts. She was a devout Baptist and shared her gift with the congregation. She was predeceased by her mother (Violet) and father (Stanley) brother Ray; sister Joan and husbands, Ebenezer and Ivor. The family would like to thank the many relatives and friends for their prayers and support. We would also like to thank the staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge for their special care. Memorial service was held Sunday, March 21, at Golden West Centennial Lodge Chapel. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the relatives and friends who attended. Special thanks to Major Roxanne Jennings for the beautiful service, and to Beverley Rosier (pianist) and Dorie Kitchen (soloist). Donations may be made in memory of Irene, to the Salvation Army Church. May God hold you, Mom in the palm of his hand. Well miss you and love you forever.
