ADAM JOZEF ZURAD Peacefully on March 17, 2004, Adam aged 89 years passed away at the Grace Hospital. He is survived by brother Bronislaw and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and their families in Poland; also a cousin Urszula Gluszczyk and family of Windsor, ON. Adam was born on February 15, 1915, in Budziwoj pow. Rzeszow, Poland. After completing high school and military service he entered the faculty of law at the University of Lwow. On August 28, 1939, Adam was recalled to the army and took part in the September Campaign. When Poland became occupied by Germany he managed to escape through Hungary to France. There he joined General Maczeks Division and took part in the defense of France. He spent most of the Second World War in occupied France taking part in resistance, working and in hiding. After the Allied invasion of France, he rejoined General Maczeks Division and was assigned to 10th Hussar Regiment of the 2nd Corps. Following training in Egypt he took part in the assault on Bologna in Italy. At the end of the war he emigrated to Canada recruited as an agricultural worker. For several years he was employed by the CNR in Winnipeg and on line maintenance in B.C. Adam settled in Winnipeg where he took an active part in the Polish community. He was a long time member of Holy Ghost Parish, a founding member of the Polish Combatants Association, Branch 13, a member of the Sokol choir and he also took part in Polish amateur theatre. Adam was best known as a good and supportive friend, always ready to lend a helping hand or financial assistance. Throughout his years in Winnipeg he became an honorary uncle to many families, often asked to be godfather. After retirement Adam lived in the Polish Manor. In 1998 he was admitted to Seven Oaks Hospital and a year later Deer Lodge Centre became his home. Many thanks to the Deer Lodge staff for their tender and loving care of Adam during his stay there and the staff at the Grace Hospital during his final days. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, 341 Selkirk Ave. with an Oblate Father officiating. Interment to follow in Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Adams memory to the Laski Instytut for Blind Children in Poland c/o Charitable Foundation of Polish Combatants Association in Canada, 1364 Main St., Winnipeg, MB R2W 3T8.
