GEORGE ARTHUR CUSTANCE September 22, 1909- March 20, 2004. George died peacefully at the Victoria Hospital on March 20, 2004 in his 95th year. In the final days of his life he was surrounded by his family and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen; sisters, Gladys Clydesdale and Muriel Clarke; brother Fred and his parents, George and Harriet. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by daughter Marilynn (Marvin) Miller; son Ted (Pauline Johnston) grandchildren, Paul (Tamie) Miller, Ryan (Wendy) Miller, Coleen (Barry) Fisher, Scott (Jayne) Custance, Todd (Donna) Custance; seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. George was born in Grandview, MB where he attended school. He worked in the general store until 1928 when he went to Detroit to find work in the Cadillac car factory. In 1929, he returned to Grandview where he was employed in the local hardware store until 1941 when he moved to Winnipeg to accept employment with the J. H. Ashdown Hardware Company as a traveling hardware salesman. He and Helen were married in 1942. In 1948, George purchased the hardware store in Crystal City, MB which he operated until his retirement in 1973. George was very active in his community serving on the school board, town council and leading numerous community projects. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 65 years. George was a gentle man of integrity, generosity and wit. He had great wisdom and compassion that touched many lives. The family would like to thank Jan and Bob Sims, Drs., David Young, Sharif and Griffin and the staff at Victoria Hospital and Lions Place for their care and understanding. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 23 (today) at 10:00 a.m. in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. with Rev. Karen Toole officiating. Following a reception at Thomsons, a second service will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Crystal City United Church in Crystal City, MB. Flowers are gratefully declined, should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation.
