Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLLOYD GRAHAM HENDERS Following a lengthy illness, Lloyd Henders, age 73 years, beloved husband of Beryl Henders, passed away surrounded by his family on April 1, 2004, at the Portage General Hospital. He was born October 9, 1930 at Elm Creek, MB. Lloyd started school at Culross, MB and completed his Grade 12 in Elm Creek. He spent a year in the Engineering faculty at the University of Manitoba, then returned home to help out on his parents farm. In 1957, he married Leona Falk. They had three children. In 1960, his parents sold the farm to Lloyd, and he took over farming full time, raising purebred pigs. In 1970, he returned to the U of M to complete his Diploma of Agriculture. He continued farming until 1972, when a degenerative lung disease forced him to retire from active farming. He then started a 13-year career in agricultural extension, first for Manitoba Agriculture, then for the Manitoba Corn Growers Association. He was widowed in 1983. Lloyd continued to live on the farm until 1986, then moved to Austin, MB to work for the Austin Credit Union. However, he retained his interest in the farm and returned to it on weekends. In 1990, he married Beryl Dennis of Austin, MB. He resided in Austin until his death. Following his retirement from the Credit Union in 1993, he and Beryl enjoyed spending their winters in Victoria, BC. Over the years he developed a large number of close friendships which he maintained over the years and the miles. Lloyd was always interested in everything, but some of his favourite pursuits were going to air shows (or any activity pertaining to flying), shooting and travelling. He was well known for never travelling the same road twice if he could help it. During his year in Engineering he was a member of the rifle club, and even in later years when a tremor shook his aim, he loved to take shots at gophers ("Deafened them!", he said). Family and friends were very important to him, and particularly after he became housebound, he took great pleasure in visits and calls. He was welcomed into both Leonas and Beryls families, and cherished those relationships as well. Lloyd was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Bernice, and his first wife Leona. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife Beryl; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Cindy and their children, Allison and Trevor; his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Phill, and his daughter Carol and her stepchildren, Kim and Adam and their father Bill; also his sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Jack Karras and family. A celebration of Lloyds life will be held at the Austin United Church in Austin, MB on Monday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. at Elm Creek Cemetery, Elm Creek, MB, followed by a luncheon at St. Andrews United Church in Elm Creek. Should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association of the Austin United Church. The Omega Funeral Home in Portage la Prairie, MB is in care of arrangements.
